How to Play
Instant Mahjong is online Japanese (riichi) mahjong where a single hand decides the game. As soon as someone wins, the game is over and you can jump straight into the next table. Only when a hand ends in an exhaustive draw does play continue at the same table until someone wins.
Getting started
- On the top screen, sign in with Google. The first time, choose your name (shown in the rankings and at the table; it cannot be changed later, and each name can be used by only one player).
- Choose Casual Battle or Ranked Battle, then 3-Player or 4-Player (the number of people waiting is shown at the top right of each button).
- Once you choose, you are matched with others who chose the same. When the table is full, "Table found" appears and the game starts after a 3-second countdown. In Casual, if the table is not full after 10 seconds, bots fill the empty seats.
- After the hand, the result is shown. "Next game" takes you to the next table; "Quit" returns to the top screen. With "Auto-start next game" checked (on by default), the next game starts 10 seconds after the scores finish appearing.
Only signed-in players who have chosen a name can play.

Controls
- Discard: double-tap a tile (the first tap selects it, the second discards it).
- Riichi: press "Riichi", then double-tap the tile to declare with. After riichi, draws are discarded automatically.
- Chi / Pon / Kan / Ron: buttons appear when you can call. If "Chi" or "Pon" can be made in more than one way (for example with or without a red five), choose the tiles from pictures. Press "Skip" to pass.
- Kita (3-player): if you hold a North tile, a "Kita" button lets you set it aside as dora.
- No calls: when on, chi/pon/kan buttons are not shown and calls are passed immediately (ron is still offered).
- Auto-win: when on, you win automatically whenever you can.
- Auto-sort: when off, you can drag tiles to arrange your hand yourself (use "Sort" at any time).
- Use 🔊 at the top right to adjust voice and sound-effect volume.
Time limit and inactivity
- You have 5 seconds per action, plus a 20-second time bank for the whole hand. When time runs out, your draw is discarded automatically (calls and ron are passed). When play continues after a draw, 10 seconds are added back to your time bank (up to 20).
- If you lose connection, you can reconnect to the same table. While disconnected, your draws are discarded automatically.
- If you are disconnected at the end of the hand, or were inactive for a total of 30 seconds or more on your own turns, you will be returned to the top screen instead of moving on to the next game.
Rules
The rules (the first win ends the game, no placement points, no abortive draws, …) are on the Rules page, and the yaku on the Yaku List page.
Rankings and stats
- Rankings ("Rankings" on the top screen) are for Ranked Battles only, split into All time, Monthly and Weekly (monthly resets on the 1st, weekly on Mondays, Japan time). Your own rating and rank are shown at the top.
- Your detailed stats are in your profile, opened by tapping your name at the top left (separately for Ranked and Casual Battles). Titles and achievements will be added there.
- For signed-in players, the point change of each hand is recorded.
- 3-player and 4-player have separate rankings, sorted by rating, total, or average (players with 20+ hands).
- Your rating starts at 1500. After each game it moves by comparing your result with each other player at the table (finishing above a stronger player raises it more; finishing below a weaker one lowers it more). It moves faster during your first 20 games. Ratings are for Ranked games only.
- Your own stats also show win rate, deal-in rate, deal-in rate after riichi, call rate, riichi rate and more, each with your rank among all players (rates and averages among players with 20+ hands).
- Graphs show your total and rating over time.
Game records
- Signed-in players keep records of their last 5 hands and up to 10 bookmarked hands. Tap ☆ on the result screen or in "Game Records" to bookmark.
- "View" replays a hand move by move with all hands visible (← → keys and space also work).
- "Copy" and "Save" export a record as JSON that game-record viewers and analysis tools can read. Some tools cannot read 3-player records.
